Distinguished guests attending the forum included: Mr.Chi Wen-Chung, Chairman of the CAC; Mr.Tai Nien-Tung, Secretary-General of the CAC; Professor Tai Nien-Tzu, Ph.D. in Pharmacy from Aston University, UK; Mr.Wang Mao-Shih, CEO of OKLAO Coffee; Ms.Chang Ching-Fang, Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Business Administration at Shih Hsin University; and Mr.Ding Zi-Hua, Chairman of Rong Hwa Carbon Neutrality.
The forum was curated by Dr.Chin Shih-Yi from National Sun Yat-sen University's Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies. Centered on the practices of Nancy Martinez, Founder of Ibagari Chocolate from Honduras, the forum led participants in a cross-disciplinary discussion on agricultural innovation and carbon governance challenges in the face of climate change.
According to a survey by Market Research Intellect, the global cocoa and chocolate consumption market was valued at $150 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $210 billion by 2033, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.5% between 2026 and 2033. Taiwan’s market alone sees an annual growth of approximately NT500toNT600 million, according to Ministry of Economic Affairs statistics.
Nancy Martinez is the first female entrepreneur from Honduras to successfully introduce the sustainable cocoa industry into the global market. Her company, Ibagari Chocolate, not only practices the three major aspects of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) but has also successfully established a contract farming system with local farmers, integrated solar natural fermentation, utilized recyclable and reduced-plastic packaging, and actively promoted forest land rotation and land restoration.
She has received high international recognition, including:
2015 International Cocoa Awards at the Salon du Chocolat in Paris (1st place in Central America, 9th place globally).
2021 Girl Boss Entrepreneur Award in Honduras (winning the grand prize among 1,700 competitors).
Forbes' 100 Most Influential Women in 2021 and 2023.
2023 "Women Business Hero" Award from the International Organisation of Employers (IOE).
Her practice is more than just fine chocolate; it is a systemic sustainable entrepreneurship model from the Global South, distinguished by a female perspective.
As a scholar dedicated to the study of international carbon strategies, Dr. Chin Shih-Yi pointed out: "Nancy Martinez's practice clearly shows us that under new systems like the Trump tariff war and the future CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism), the agricultural and food industries will no longer be merely passive participants in carbon reduction. They will become proactive subjects of carbon governance with strategic maneuvering space."
He emphasized that the Ibagari model has embedded two core principles: the 'Carbon Responsibility Supply Chain' and 'Low-Carbon Social Innovation'. The model's contributions to climate efforts, from origin management and community empowerment to production processing and environmental supervision, are quantifiable.
"This is not just southern agriculture adapting to climate change; it is a sustainable governance technology that can be exported in the global carbon market. As Taiwan undergoes its carbon transition, it can reference such transnational corporate models and strategic alliances to expand the enterprise carbon value network."
Professor Tai Nien-Tzu , Ph.D. in Pharmacy, pointed out that Ibagari uses natural cocoa, which is rich in antioxidant factors such as flavanols and theobromine. This grants it high-potential functional food application value in health.
Secretary-General Tai Nien-Tung stated that while aviation and agriculture may seem distant, the catering supply chain and carbon emission sources of future green airports all have the potential to integrate products with traceable carbon footprints. He emphasized, "This is the airport's responsibility, but also an upgrade of corporate value."
CEO Wang Mao-Shih , speaking from the perspective of boutique agriculture, said: "Nancy Martinez has allowed the value of agriculture to return to the producers while strengthening the sustainable value of the brand."
Assistant Professor Chang Ching-Fang stressed that ESG is not just a report but a tangible manifestation of sustainable products and innovative agriculture.
Chairman Ding Zi-Hua noted that with the imminent pressure of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), enterprises must seize international cooperation opportunities to enhance their carbon governance practices. This will enable them to secure their position in future green supply chains and rapidly promote corporate carbon neutrality
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Chin Shih-Yi pointed out: "What Nancy Martinez brings is not just the success of a brand or a product, but a model for agricultural carbon governance that can be exported, and a sustainable innovation force voiced by an enterprise from the Global South."
He emphasized that if this kind of practice can be integrated with Taiwan's technology, monitoring, and financial systems, it will form a Transregional Carbon Governance Partnership. This partnership would not only serve as a new opportunity for global sustainable trade but also enable Taiwan to play a more strategically proactive role in climate diplomacy.
Looking ahead to the COP30 UN Climate Summit in Brazil in 2025, Dr. Chin asserted: "We cannot merely be 'observers' or 'reactors.' We must become participants in innovative carbon governance and co-constructors of the system. This climate action started with a piece of chocolate. Taiwan and Central and South America are now jointly paving an international sustainable path toward a green future."
